This
EP answers the question, "What would Speed Metal sound like if it were
slowed down a little?” This apparent oxymoron, and the resulting attempt
to resolve it, yield some interesting results.
Opening
track, "Worthy Of Hell,” is dominated by a Speed Metal riff played over
a simple 4/4 drum rhythm, though the pace is a tad reduced from the one
played by most Speed Metal bands. This is actually not the letdown one
would imagine, as it allows the listener to pay close attention to the
mechanics of the song and dissect what the band are doing. Ditto the
following track, "Reap The Nuclear Whirlwind.”
VICTIMIZER
also take an interesting approach to the arrangements and the mix. This
release displays a compelling juxtaposition of modern bass and guitar
technology with a spacious-sounding analog production quality. The
result is a fusion of the old school and the new, with a prominent
low-end sound processed in a more live-sounding environment. As for the
mix, none of the guitar solos have been pulled forward, leaving them to
compete with the riffs for supremacy. What the listener is left with is a
sound that is simultaneously polished, yet raw.
The
only letdowns here are the third and fourth tracks, which are solid,
but eschew the frantic quality of the first two in favor of a more
Groove vibe. Furthermore, the band succumb to the movie-clip-as-intro
clichй. This device has become trite over the years, and on this EP is
no more than a distraction.
Fans
of both Old-School and Revival Thrash will find something to enjoy
here. While not without its flaws, "Resurrected Abominations” is worth a
listen.
