Riverside is a critically acclaimed progressive rock band from
Warsaw, Poland. It was founded in 2001 by Mariusz Duda, Piotr
Grudziński and Piotr Kozieradzki, who shared a love for progressive
rock and heavy metal. Following their 2003 debut Out of Myself, the
band were signed by major prog metal label InsideOut, releasing Second
Life Syndrome in 2005. In 2006, Voices In My Head, an EP originally
recorded to provide Polish fans with new Riverside material between the
first and second full length albums, was re-released under the
InsideOut label. In 2007, the band released the album Rapid-Eye
Movement under their current label as well as tour in support for Dream
Theater on the European leg of their tour. Riverside's music has been
described[citation needed] as a mix between Anathema, Dream Theater,
Marillion, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Pain of Salvation, A Perfect Circle, and
Porcupine Tree, containing long, ethereal keyboard-laden passages and
heavy, crunchy metal riffs.

Riverside - "Second Life Syndrome"
For many people (Including myself), the Polish progressive rock act Riverside’s
2003 debut Out Of Myself (Which was re-released a year later by U.S.
label The Laser’s Edge) was largely missed due to a genuine lack of
exposure.
Those who did manage to secure a copy were soon signing the praises
of the quartet (Comprising of vocalist/bassist Mariusz Duda, guitarist
Piotr Grudziñski, keyboardist Michal Lapaj and drummer Piotr
Kozieradzki), with many proclaiming the band as the next big thing in
progressive rock.
Since then, the band has signed on to the highly influential Inside
Out Music label (Which I might say is a positive sign) for the release
of their highly anticipated sophomore effort Second Life Syndrome.
Riverside’s Second Life
Syndrome is nothing short of an extraordinary tapestry that intertwines
incredible emotional depth with a compelling and predominantly
melancholy soundtrack in the vein of fellow progressive giants Arena,
(Mellow sounding) Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Pain Of Salvation and later
day Anathema, but without mimicking any one of the said acts as such.
Picking up conceptually where their debut left off, the band opt to
start off the album with the percussive heavy/multi layered vocalised
‘After’, which builds slowly towards a climatic guitar solo mid way
through, before finally reaching it’s conclusion with an equally long
fade out.
In a complete change of mood, ‘Volte-Face’ opens up with some
heavier Porcupine Tree like riffs and rhythms, before gently moving
into Arena like territory with Duda using some well placed growls to
emphasise the aggressive moments, while the highlights of the album
come with the hauntingly beautiful pairing of ‘Conceiving You’ and ‘I
Turned You Down’.
The epic fifteen minute centrepiece title track ‘Second Life
Syndrome’ amplifies Grudziñski’s
subtle Pink Floyd influences within
the opening few minutes before delving into some heavy riffing
alongside thick keyboards, all the while Duda keeps the melodies sharp
and memorable right through to the tail end.
The straightforward, heavy and concise ‘Artificial Smile’ comes
across as a complete reversal of the former tracks style, which is
carried through to the complex instrumental ‘Reality Dream III’ (Which
is a continuation of parts one and two from their debut) and the
expansive ‘Dance With The Shadow’, while the huge sounding ‘Before’
brings the album to an dramatic end.
In a short space of two releases, Riverside
have quickly joined the league of the elite with a sound that bears a
slight resemblance to many acts within the progressive rock scene, yet
individual enough to call their one their own.
Second Life Syndrome is a stunning second effort, and had it not
been released so late in the year, would have comfortable sat in my top
ten progressive rock albums of 2005.
