Their sound incorporates various elements of folk metal, doom metal, NWOBHM and thrash metal. It is the main project of John Cobbett, also guitarist of Ludicra. The original lineup consisted of members of L7, Malefice (Washington D.C.), The Lord Weird Slough Feg and the aforementioned Ludicra. Previously known as Unholy Cadaver, John Cobbett changed the name to Hammers of Misfortune for their 2001 release The Bastard (on San Francisco-based Tumult Records). The Bastard is a concept album with a 3-act tale of royalty and betrayal. This album received many positive reviews in the metal community, including several "best of 2001" awards from magazines such as Terrorizer and Lamentations Of The Flame Princess. In 2003 the band signed a deal with Cruz Del Sur Music, releasing their second album The August Engine by the end of the same year. This album was also well received by the metal community, getting a 10/10 review from Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles magazine among other acclamations. After The August Engine, Janis Tanaka left the band. Their most recent release is Fields/Church of Broken Glass, two separate albums which were issued in October 2008 as a two-CD set. After The Locust Years, there was a large lineup change. Female vocal duties were taken over by Jesse Quattro. The original drummer, Chewy, rejoined the band. Mike Scalzi left the band, in order to focus on his main band, The Lord Weird Slough Feg. In March 2010, Hammers of Misfortune announced that they had signed a record deal with Metal Blade Records and will release four of the its previous releases in late summer 2010 with a new studio album expected in 2011 wikipedia | |
