Stormwitch were a German heavy metal band from the 1980s. They were also known as "The Masters of Black Romantic." The band's song lyrics often focused on fantasy, occult or historical themes, anticipating power metal along with their contemporaries and countrymen Helloween. They performed at Wacken Open Air festival in 2002.

Some of Stormwitch's songs have been covered by Hammerfall (Ravenlord) and White Skull (Tears By The Fire Light).
Formed in 1979 under the name "Lemon Sylvan". The name was changed into Stormwitch in 1981.
The band have performed in a concert known as "Rock-Fabrik Festival '84", extracts from this were then included on a album called "Heavy Metal - Live in Germany, vol.1" which included some other German heavy metal bands who were active at the time such as Restless, Tyran' Pace and Cacumen
Stormwitch was the first band to play Iron Maiden style heavy metal in Germany, and as such should be considered the father of German power metal.
Singer Andy Mück has stated that the band will release a 10th studio album named "Tears Of Rage". The album was supposedly to be released late 2005/early 2006, however, the delay has most likely been due to another large line-up change.
В начале 80-х годов трое школьных приятелей (гитаристы Харальд Шпенглер, Стефан Кауфманн и вокалист Энди Мюк) задумали сколотить металлическую команду. Родители были шокированы выбором ребят, но парни не обращали на это внимания, а занялись укомплектовкой состава, параллельно сочиняя собственные песни.
Ритм-секцию составили ударник Петер Лангер и бас-гитарист Томас Глейсбург по прозвищу "Ронни Пирсон". Когда кадровая проблема была решена "Stormwitch" начали давать клубные концерты и мало-помалу сколотили себе армию поклонников, которые начали требовать дебютной пластинки.
И вот в 1984 году группа записала альбом "Walpurgis night", работа над которым была как раз закончена в Вальпургиеву ночь. Парни постарались сделать саунд максимально "тру", отказавшись от мультитрековых заморочек и перезаписывая каждый раз неудачные фрагменты полностью. За первой пластинкой последовали еще две, после чего бас-гитара перешла к Энди Хантеру.
На четвертом диске "Stormwitch" впервые прозвучала баллада, и как впоследствии оказалось не зря. Песня "Tears by the firelight" получила культовый статус и стала визитной карточкой концертов группы. Кстати, начиная с этого момента, музыканты во время своих выступлений стали использовать средневековые костюмы, что помогло им выделиться из мрачной массы металлистов. В 1987 году немецкая команда прорвалась за "железный занавес", устроив гастроли в Венгрии, а Петер даже умудрился привезти оттуда себе жену. Позже на основе этого тура был выпущен концертник "Live in Budapest". Из-за финансовых проблем лейбла альбом "Eye of the storm" вышел маленьким тиражом, и поэтому не все фаны смогли ознакомиться с такими бесподобными вещами как "Rondo a la turca" и "King in the ring".
В дальнейшем Харальд занял должность менеджера группы, а свою гитару передал в ведение Вольфганга Шлуди. Еще позже Энди Хантер ушел в "Lazy", уступив место Мартину Альбрехту. Дебют бас-гитариста состоялся на чехословацких гастролях, где "Stormwitch" выступали в одной связке с "Krokus".
Когда у коллектива был готов материал для альбома "War of the wizards", им заинтересовались представители "Sony". Однако из-за политики "Gama records", ведавшего в то время делами группы, мажорный контракт так и не был подписан, а пластинка вышла только в 1992 году с помощью "SPV". Большую утрату команда понесла, когда ушел один из ее лидеров, Стефан Кауфманн. Теперь в коллективе появились два гитариста: Джо Гассманн и Дамир Узунович, которые никак не могли договориться друг с другом и тормозили весь творческий процесс. В конце концов, Гассманну пришлось уйти, но альбом "Shogun", записанный с одним Дамиром, имел мало общего с предыдущими работами "Stormwitch". В коллективе начались раздоры, и в итоге проект развалился.
Возвращение "Штормовых ведьм" состоялось в 2002 году, когда на лейбле "Silverdust" вышел альбом "Dance of the witches". И хотя из старичков в составе остался только Мюк, релиз привлек к себе внимание металлической общественности. Ну а после подписания контракта с "Nuclear blast" у "Stormwitch" появился шанс для серьезного прорыва.
